Last Friday night, Greeks, alumni, students, parents, and Lincoln University staff assembled in Manuel Rivero Hall to watch Greek letter organizations and social fellowship groups battle it out for the titles of Best Sorority and Best Fraternity.
The bleachers were full within the first hour after doors opened. The step show was hosted by Lincoln University alumni Wehneh Tidoe of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and Anthony Sierra of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
In front of a jam-packed audience each of the nine organizations had approximately twelve minutes to showcase their skills, with hopes of winning the hearts of the crowd.
"I've never seen so many people in such a small space in all my life. Look around there are really people sitting on the floor to watch this show", said Valerie Smith, parent of Lincoln University sophomore Britney Johnson. "I was hesitant about coming to the show, but my daughter convinced me to come and I'm glad I did. This is so so amazing. All of the organizations are doing great. This is going to be a tough one to call".
There were many spectators who complained about the lack of seating. Some students gave up their seats and sat on the floor to accomodate parents and children.
"The show was definitely exciting", said sophomore Victoria Briggs. "I'm glad I got [to the show] early, otherwise I would have been sitting on the floor or standing up. Next year [SGA] should definitely consider choosing a bigger venue. There was absolutely no space anywhere. People were crammed on the bleachers like sardines. Other than the issue of seating I enjoyed the show."
As judges made final ruling on the winners, Greeks "strolled" around the gymnasium chanting and further electrifying the crowd while audience members danced in their seats.
The Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, notorious for their unique, complex step style, won Best Fraternity and their sister sorority Zeta Phi Beta won Best Sorority.
"I'm extremely proud of myself and my frats because we worked extremely hard for this," said Abdul Barr Khaliq, a senior and member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. "I'm talking about practicing into the wee hours of the morning and whenever we had spare time. We earned the title, and we plan on coming harder next year to defend it".
