Stressed out Student Government Association members made it through the day. Worries that the show wasn't going to be as successful as past years were put to rest. And rumors that the celebrity artists, Fabolous and Nicki Minaj, were not going to show up were proven false.
Wrist bands, VIP passes and off-campus tickets were being distributed from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. by SGA members.
"SGA members' day actually started off at 7am, no SGA member could attend the game considering we had to hand out wrist bands and things of the such," said SGA President Courtney Tipper. "Dealing with artist is not something that comes easy, but everything actually went more smoothly than we expected."
About one hundred people were already in line at 4:00 p.m. when off-campus tickets went on sale. Members of SGA and other LU faculty helped at the sales booth. Even though Lincoln may have lost to Bowie State University in football that day, everyone was still excited about the kick-off of the school's homecoming.
Doors for the concert opened around 7:00 p.m, and security and public safety were fully staffed and ready for anything. Despite the disorder and rowdiness of concert lines in past years at Lincoln, the movement of the line was efficient.
Opening acts of the concert consisted of LU Idol winner Antonio Leaks, past Lincoln student Daddy-O, and another rap group from Philadelphia, who brought out a surprise guest, one of Philly's most popular up and coming rap artist, Meek Mills.
"I could hear my heart beat over everything else," Leaks said while describing his expereince on stage. "I felt so privileged to perform in front of the same people that would be watching Fabolous and Nicki Minaj."
The show also consisted of surprise host Milan Carter, former Mr. Lincoln and SGA President who graduated from the university last year. He described his experience of coming back to the university as amazing.
"I spent four years here, and it propelled me into being a man and to chase my dreams. Lincoln will always be my home and family," he said.
Carter now works as an intern for Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight, and he helps with HipHollywood.com, a website that features minority artist.
