Pump Handle-a yearly celebration that involves a pep rally, forums, a carnival, basketball games and parties-was met with signs of disapproval by students who said that this year's event left them desiring much more.
Students expressed disappointment at the lack of events and said that this year's event scaled in comparison to other years.
"Lincoln tried to use the excuse of bad
weather as the reason to why we didn't do much this year, but I think that's a lie," said Shanisse Conway, a senior. "I feel bad for the freshman because they didn't even get to experience a nice pump handle."
This semester, there was only one party for pump handle and a Pan Hellenic forum held by the Greek organizations on campus. The basketball games, the 2nd off campus party and the pep rally were all cancelled. SGA and university officials said that budget deficit forced organizers to scale back this year's event.
That explanation did not bring solace to first year students like Leona Wallace who said that she had been looking forward to the celebration.
"When I first came here I heard pump handle would be exciting and fun, but this was horrible and I feel like I lost part of my freshman experience," said Wallace, who added that she hopes that improvements are made for next year.
