Davis and Henson Make 2009 Oscar Nominations

The biggest night in Hollywood recognizes two black women in the same category for their acting roles this year. This year's Oscar nominees are headed up by actresses Taraji P. Henson for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Viola Davis for Doubt. Both women are up for best actress in a supporting role. Marisa Tomei was nominated for The Wrestler, Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Amy Adams for Doubt.

Viola Davis a South Carolina native, plays in Doubt the role of Mrs. Miller who learns her son may be a victim of abuse by a school priest. She has previously been recognized in Disturbia, Antwon Fisher, and The Fantasia Barrino Story. Davis has also been nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Doubt, and has three previous wins and eight nominations for other roles.

Taraji P. Henson, a native of Washington D.C. plays Queenie, a nursemaid to Benjamin Button who ages backward. Taraji is best known for her roles in Hustle & Flow, Baby Boy, and The Family That Preys. She has three BET Awards for her work along with several other awards and nominations. Henson is also starring with Morris Chestnut in this year's Not Easily Broken released earlier this month. Both actresses have been nominated for Screen Actors Guild (SAG) in this category.

The 81st annual Academy Awards will be aired live on ABC on Sunday February 22nd 5pm/8pm ET at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, California. This is the first nomination for an Academy Award for both actresses.
