At about 3 p.m. last week, students, faculty, and staff made their way to Manuel Rivero Hall to attend the Student Government Association's and to hear Dr. Ivory V. Nelson address the entire Lincoln University community, in the first Convocation of the 2008-2009 academic school-year.

As the organ struck melodious chords, Lincoln's faculty and administrators fully dressed in academic regalia, processed down the center aisle of the gymnasium. Following closely behind were Mr. and Ms. Lincoln, and the executive board of SGA.

There was a moment of silence to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, seven years earlier.

The Concert Choir of Lincoln University belted out a rendition of "Lift Every Voice for Freedom," by Moses Hogan and Dr. William B. Bynum, the vice president for student affairs introduced the ceremony by urging students to get more involved in university sponsored events.

"Spread the word about convocations…," he said. "We promise to get you in and out in an orderly fashion."

Bynum also announced that in about a year from now, the International Cultural Center that is still under construction will be the new venue for all University Convocations.

Mr. and Ms. Lincoln, Chester Hampton, and Brooke Womack addressed the audience and rallied students, faculty and staff.

"We must maximize individual potential," said Womack. And as she acknowledged the newly elected SGA, she encouraged the students to not "be content with mediocrity."

Bynum introduced Dr. Grant D. Venerable, II., the vice president of academic affairs as "the smartest man on campus". Venerable spoke of Lincoln metaphorically, comparing the university to the way a sycamore tree extracts resources that contributes to its development and growth. Lincoln, Venerable said, is expanding, maturing, and developing into a larger "organism."

For almost a decade, this Sycamore Tree has been under the care of Nelson, who approached the podium with a purpose and message not only for students but the entire university community.

It is good to know the goals of Lincoln as a family, and not as an individual. This piece was informative and straight to the point.

Informative of the events on campus. I also believe this article holds some truth about Womack saying students must maximize their individual potential. (Continued…)
