Freshmen sensation, Melvin Robinson Jr., a member of Lincoln University's baseball team, has been named The Lincolnian player of the week.
During his stellar week, the Bear, DE., native posted a batting average of .357. Robinson had five hits including a team leading sixth double of the season against Virginia State.
He also played a key role in beating a double-play which allowed Omar Glinton to score the winning run in the first game of a doubleheader against Saint Paul's College last Saturday. As a result, the lions defeated Saint Paul's College by a score of 9-8.
In addition to being a field player, Robinson is also a pitcher on the team. Displaying his versatility, Robinson posted a career-high eight strikeouts during the game against Virginia State. He also scored five runs and drove in three runs.
Robinson's great performance, coupled with formidable efforts from his teammates, helped the Lions finish the week with the record of 1-2-1. For the season, the team has a record of 1-13-1.
"He's a great player....very well rounded," said Jordean Matthews, a student who travels with the team. "He can play basically any position you put him at...he will be much better in the later years with guidance." Matthews added.
Although the team is struggling, Robinson appears to be one of the rays of hope for the team. He leads the team in doubles and runs scored. He is second in hits thus far this season and runs batted in (RBIs). Robinson also has four stolen bases. As a pitcher, he is second on the team in the amount of people that he has struck out.
Despite the team's struggle thus far this season, Robinson feels that the Lions have what it takes to finish the season strong. The teams' struggle can attributed to some players playing out-of-position, injuries and player ineligibility due to poor academic performance.
"A lot of people are playing positions in which they haven't played prior to this year," Robinson said. "It's a learning experience for most of us."
